[Good Read] Why good managers are so rare

Came across this interesting article on HBR about the importance of hiring a good manager and how important they are for employee engagement.

Here are a few pointers I loved from the article:

  1. Managers account for at least 70% of variance in employee engagement scores across business units, Gallup estimates.
  2. Gallup reported in two large-scale studies in 2012 that only 30% of U.S. employees are engaged at work, and a staggeringly low 13% worldwide are engaged.
  3. If great managers seem scarce, it’s because the talent required to be one is rare.
  4. They (good managers) build relationships that create trust, open dialogue, and full transparency.
